The angst of atheist parents: How to keep kids from finding out about God ...
Here Danny Postel investigates for the New Humanist (July/August 2009) about raising kids without religion.
My sense is that it usually won't work. What happens is that the kid assumes that local prejudices run the universe. But a smart kid soon realizes that that ain't so. So what does run the universe? How about this?
For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuseWithout excuse, that is, for actions which they themselves sense to be wrong. It's not completely cheerful, but it is a way better bet than trying to shelter kids from this stuff.
